In Cherokee Mythology, Selu was the first woman and goddess of the corn. Her name means Maize in the Cherokee language and according to the story, her spirit resurrects with each harvest, in spite of the fact that she was killed by her twin sons, who feared her power. With great wisdom and selflessness, she taught them to plant and sow the corn, so she could return each season and provide the fields’ bounty to all her people. This is one of many myths and legends in Native American cultures-I am especially drawn to the Cherokee, growing up in Oklahoma.
